Dixie Mafia Hit!

The Twelfth of August by W. R. Morris (Cherokee Press, Reagan, TN, 251 pages, $19.95) is the "Walking Tall" Sheriff Buford Pusser's authorized biography. It was a bestseller when it was first published in 1971, and inspired the "Walking Tall" movies.

Author W.R. Morris has since updated the book with a new chapter that includes Dixie Mafia henchman Kirksey Nix (named by Sheriff Pusser as the assassin of the lawman's wife) and former Biloxi Mayor Pete Halat's involvement in the murders of Judge Vincent Sherry and his spouse.

Nix, Halat, and two others were recently convicted for the Sherry slayings.

Twelfth of August is the day Buford Pusser was ambushed and his wife murdered -- the day he served final notice on the mob that South was not big enough for them both!

New information: According to the author, Pusser assassin teams with ex-mayor to murder Biloxi judge and his wife.

The book was a bestseller and inspired the three Walking Tall movies. -- Daily Corinthian, April 27, 1997.
